The Which is Worse Thread

One of your friends has invited you to a social function. You didn't get all of the details but you know the when and the where.

You try to get back in contact with your friend in order to find out the dress code but can't reach them.

Of the following choices Which is Worse? Why?:

A. Being overdressed at a casual party

B. Being underdressed at a formal party

Just make a choice from the options above or watch from the stands.

I think turning up to what you thought was a fancy dress party in full fancy dress and then finding out when you get there that they decided to can the fancy dress idea and everyone else is dressed normally .... a la Bridget Jones

I'd say being underdressed is worse.
It's easier to go less formal when dressed formal than vise versa. Take off your tie/bow, open a few buttons, loose the jacket etc.
Oh, I'm only speaking of manly clothes of course

Sorry, if I can't wear my jeans probable won't go. The last time I got all dressed up I got married. Wore jeans to the divorce court, felt a whole lot better.

I'd dress down to jeans and a t-shirt and clothe myself in attitude instead.

I would prefer to be overdressed at a casual party, than under dressed at a formal. But then if I didn't know I'd probably try and find something that can be both.

But then I hate dressing up and so I probably wouldn't even get close to what you need to wear for a formal occasion.
