    Default Parental supervision of kids

Hugh topic. On another thread, we exchanged comments about school fights.

At my grandson's middle school, I will be involved with all manner of things, from fund raising to supervising field trips. I am usually respected (probably too strong a word).

One day I was telling a local merchant that the kids at the school were much more reserved than their reputation. The merchant was distracted by a commotion behind me. Turning, I see two girls in a knock down, drag out fight in the middle of the busiest intersection in the neighborhood. So much my advocacy for the school!

    What to do? Comments?

Put the parents in prison or as far away from the kids as possible. Well: Monkey see, monkey do. If little "Sarah" sees Mum slap up [the Mum's] sister, then what's the girl [Sarah] going to do? Be an angel.......definitely not!

I think it is more a question of what's on TV. Kids watch far too much TV which is often not monitored by the parents.

As a teacher, I see many girls fighting, even fighting boys! I then ask: What will you do when he hits back, don't you know that boys are stronger than girls?

"No, Miss, they're not!" - with an extra "whack" to prove the point.

It's definitely a concern. I agree a lot of behaviour is a copy of what they see others around them doing and also what they see on TV etc.But girls have been playing the part you mentioned (success4hannah) for years, well they did when I was in highschool 15 years ago!

Things change fast in this world. We were taught it was "unladylike" to hit boys, and "beneath your dignity" and besides, if he hits back, you're in big trouble! But that was around 30 years ago. I suppose now it is "equality" and all that, and I'm old fashioned? :-)

Accept that children are raw and undeveloped and that they need disciplined civilising. They are not blank tablets, waiting to copy the examples of all they see on TV or amongst their own family - they are wild animals that become civilised by a civilised society. If the children remain uncivilised, it is because we are no longer civil. Every culture everywhere at every time has come to this conclusion - except we think we know better now and have modernised the world as a proof of our own enlightenment and high moral standing. The result has been chaos, mass murder, environmental devastation that may be beyond repair, and cultural spoliation that reveals us industrialised peoples as a disgrace to all the world. John Ford (the movie director) said of the modern age, "Our ancestors would be disgusted by us." Frankly, I think they disowned us long ago.
