    Default Olympic Coverage

Since I've been sick most of this week I've had a chance to watch quite a bit of the Olympics and I must say I'm slightly disappointed with their coverage of some of the events.

It seems that they think everyone is interested in every single heat of every single event in the pool. So they play it. Then I find out that they're going to show some Gymnastics and then they just play snippets of a few events. I was most disappointed. I really enjoy the gymnastics. Same with the equestrian. It would be great if they had a channel dedicated solely to the Olympics so you could watch (or tape) the entirety of the event that you enjoy.

Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy watching the swimming, but EVERY SINGLE HEAT in EVERY SINGLE EVENT? Even when NZ aren't even involved? There's probably people out there that don't enjoy Gymnastics ... that's why my idea of a dedicated channel is a good one ... well in my opinion anyway

I too have been disapointed finding out 1) just how much swimming, I'd prefer to see just the races with the NZers in it and also the big names, I mean really how much can you watch them going up and down for, I get boared.

Also how little of NZ they are showing. I mean they are showing some of NZ, but I was watching the cross country and there was hardly any footage of the NZers. But I realise that might be to do with the fact there is only 1 camera crew there distributing the footage for it to all broadcasters.

I think the coverage not looking like it is being taliored completley to NZ's wants, might be becuase of how many other countries they are providing services for. TVNZ have something like 150 crew members over there, and they are providing taliored services for some big asian countries and South Africa, and then there are quite a few pacfic nations that are getting the coverage as we see it on TV1.

I hope that you feel better soon, I lived in Atlanta during the 1996 Olympics, so I know what you are saying about poor coverage

I agree totally. I undersand that we are in NZ and need to cover events with Kiwis in them, but whatever country you are in there is always going to be bias.

There are hundred of events at anytime going on, and obviously we cant cover everything, but there really has been limited coverage of sailing, where was the show jumping of te 3 day event (cheating germans btw).

At least we get the rowing tonight. And good on TV1 for moving the news. But showing random events like beach volley ball for hours when there are many minority sports that arent even being covered disappoints me.

And as for swimming. Thats got to be the Aussie influence. Swimmers in Oz has major sporting heros, comparable to their rubgy and cricket players. Every country is different I guess

There is also the IOCs strict coverage rights rules.

According to TV3, because they don't have the rights, they are very restricted on what they can show.

eg: No more than 1/3 of any one event (in the case of the 100m, thats about 3 seconds), nothing that is over 48 hours old (there goes the Olympic plays of the week), and they must wasi (I think) 12 hours before showing anything.

In San Francisco, we get swimming and gymnastics. But only with Americans entered.

At least the OIC insist that coverage in on terrestrial TV and free to air. Otherwise Murdoch would just make another fucking fortune out of sports fans.

YAY for the Evers-Swindell twins! Our first gold!

I think TV1 could have put their news onto TV2 (who really needs to see Friends for the 50 millionth time) so then they could have Olympic Coverage starting at 6.00pm every night.

My Dad said in aussie they have 24 hour coverage of the olymipics on their channel 7
I thought that was good. I can't see why they couldn't have hijacked some channel somewhere (Maori channel?) for the 2 weeks and put it on 24 7. Then have some coverage that is on tv one, live races/games of our teams, and other highlights (kind of like they are) so people who can't get the other channel can still keep up.

The Olymics are on a pay per view channel. On a 24/7 type basis.

Now, on the non pay per view channels, we have lost sight of the concept of public ownership of the airways.

So the public channel is NBC for a couple hours in the evening.

    Oh, well.

    About Murdoch,

Colin Powell's son is the head of the reglatory agency for the airways, called the FCC. Powell has given them (the broadcasters, the green light on taking over as many stations as they wish. Pre shrub, the regulation was they could own 3 or 4 stations in a market. A market would be like the San Francisco Bay Area.

The above is not precise but is correct in concept.

    Peace

    ed

On Monday night, there is going to be a highlights package on the telly... I am looking forward to this as I didn't get to see allot of it, so it will be good to see all the Kiwi's in action! Particularly to see the medal winners again...

I think this is what I like about NZ.

You like your teams. Not for what they have done for you but rather that they are your teams.

As you would say, penny "Good on you"! You are all winners and your Olympians are better for having you.

Yes, I also like the team.

The part that I have a problem with is that the US (our team) is made of people who provide exactly the same service professionally.

Kind of like saying, "We will make American football an Olympic sport". Then running in the St Louis Rams to play the Croatian team. (No slight against either team or country). But then there is no match.

We have tennis as an Olympic sport. Roddick represented us. He is a pro and ranked #1 in the world. Pros should not be in the Olympics.

The whole thing about the Balco labs scandal is about professionals winning at all costs.

Track and Field who make their living endorsing products should not be there.

Jim Thorpe lost his medals because of a season of baseball. That was not what he did in the Olympics.

    http://www.cmgww.com/sports/thorpe/thorpe.html

The problem is that the US should be leading the way to remove the Olympics from the professionals and move it back to the amateurs. But where there is money, there is media and where there is media there is momentum for more money.

It is not even a circle, more like a lever with no focal point. Just back and forth, higher and higher.

I see that the US basketball team didn't get into the finals for the first time in a number of years.

You'd kind of expect the US to be in contention for the Gold every single year but this year I think Argentina won gold (one of the two golds in total they won in the Olympics).
