Topic: How to Pronounce the name of "That Volcano in Iceland"

The BBC's Pronunciation Unit's guide says the volcano should be pronounced AY-uh-fyat-luh-YOE-kuutl (-uh). That is -ay as in day, -fy as in few, -oe as in French coeur, -uu as in boot, the -tl as in atlas. The (-uh) is "a" as in ago.

RIGHT! Glad we cleared that up. I think I'll just refer to it as 'that volcano'! Icelanders obviously have different tongues to us.

Indeed.

Paul Henry and Pippa Wetsell (breakfast TV presenters) admitted that they were taking the easy way out by calling it 'the Volcano' the other morning.

I think Pippa gave it a go one day. Now sure how that happened.

I think I would opt for the volcano and if you need to be more specific you can always say - the volcano that is erupting.

My 4 year old thinks its about the most exciting thing ever that a volcano is erupting.

I'll just stick with "the volcano" as well ... much much much easier to say.
