Recently at a murder trial, the lawyer described the killing as not being all that serious (or similar)
The victim was an 80-year old, the killer about 30. That disgraceful lawyer should have got the same sentence as his rotten client.
It is not the only such disgraceful attempt to get despicable clients acquited.
There needs to be change.
Here is how it should work. At the very first appearance in court, the judge says to the Police... "why have you arrested this person?" They get 10 minutes to outline their case. Then the judge says to the defendant, yes, the defendant, not the lawyer, "Do you contest the outline of the case of the Police, silence will be interpreted as agreement and sentencing will follow".
If the defendant says "It's a frame up, it wasn't me, they're lying, I'm innocent"
The judge now turns to the defence lawyer and says.. "Do you dispute the outline of the police case, knowing that if your client is found guilty, you will receive the same sentence?"
That might discourage the disgraceful things that too many lawyers have been saying.
Remember Clayton Weatherston? At his first appearance... he did not say a word.
Remember Dartelle Alder? He knocked over a woman jogging along the road, raped her, bundled her into the boot of his car where she later died, and drove home, the windscreen smashed, blood all over the car. His rotten parents said "What would like for lunch dear?"
A rotten lawyer got up in court and tried to get Alder acquited. He should have got the same life sentence. Instead, he got to Parliament, only for one term, then thrown out, but got another 3 years on the list. Now, thankfully, he is out of that place. He should be in a cell.
OK, so once in a decade or so, there would be a mistake, and heaps of compensation paid. Better that than the dreadful state of the courts now.
There would need to be a parrallel result if rotten cops are caught presenting false evidence.
How these lawyers can look in the mirror, puzzles me. How their family, friends, colleagues can bear to be in the same room as them ... aslo amazes me.
