    Default Where to go?

Hi, iam a 20y old swede(from sweden ;P) that is probably going to come to nz in a couple of month to work for 6 month in the restaurant business.
I was wondering if you had any suggestions about wich city to go to. It would be great if it was close to the beach, we dont get alot of sandy beach up in the northen parts of sweden

Since iam going to work as a chef it would allso be a good thing if the city had a lot of restaurangs, so it would probably have to one of the bigger citys... damn iam demanding ;P

I would realy appreciate if you could anser some or all of these questions of mine, ty in advance =).

The simple answer would be Auckland (also known as "The City of Sails" due to all the yachts). I do not think there is a part of Auckland that is more than 1/2 an hour (by car) from the beach. On the west coast there are surf beaches (with black iron sand) and on the east there are swiming and sunbathing beaches with white sand (we generally don't have rocky beaches in Auckland).

As it is also the biggest city in New Zealand (with about 1/4 of the population living there) you should have no problems finding resturants to work in (make sure you have your visa / work permit sorted though).

    Enjoy
"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, champagne in one hand, strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "WOO-HOO What a ride!"

If you're looking for something varied, I'd suggest looking in the Hawkes Bay. Bay = beaches.

The restaurants here are without peer. And the vineyard life is good.

Cheaper than living in Auckland - and the pay is about the same if you have experience. It has great weather. Working in Auckland is fine - but it's kinda like Gothenburg. Just another city. If ya really want to see New Zealand, consider Hawkes Bay.

Nelson also has a similar climate - and beaches are nearby.

The plusses for both places are the fact that backpackers/travellers are always welcome if they have a strong back to pick apples or skills in hospitality.

Both are central to the wine industry, and have a little culture about them.

Napier is also known for it's art deco if that interests you at all, they put on tours for people interested in it.

Rotorua is a lovely city in the North Island - it's a bit smelly though coz it's got loads of geothermal pools. When you've lived there a while you get used to the smell. There's heaps of fun stuff to do in Rotorua and you're quite close to the East Coast beaches.

Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island. It's also a beautiful city and has quite a lot of history about it. It also gets VERY cold in winter which we will be coming into shortly.

So .... Christchurch gets snow in winter and Rotorua doesn't -- I guess it just depends on what you would prefer.

    Cool Re: Where to go?

    Hello,
Go down to Dunedin. It's really friendly. It's close to the ocean and mountains and has nice valleys. Great for if you like the wide open spaces. But there's a city vibe and lots of students. It'll be right up your alley.
