Ayran
pronounce: [aɪˈran] or [I run]
Popular Turkish beverage.
1 1/2 cup plain yogurt
1 1/2 cup water
1 tsp salt
This is very straight-forward but tastes great: Put all of the above in a blender. Mix for about 35-40 seconds. Pour into glasses. Also after blending, at the top, you will see bubbles and that's the best part. Makes 4 portions. The drink shouldn't be thick. Salt is usually added to it for flavour.
Origins of the word "yogurt":
The word comes from the Turkish word "yoğurt", deriving from the verb "yoğurtmak", which means "to blend" - a reference to how yogurt is made.




It is a very popular drink all over country. It is served with doner, kebabs, koftes, meat dishes and pilav (pilaf) as a beverage or it is just served as a refreshment during summer months. It should be always be served cold. Another recipe common to Turkey includes finely chopped mint leaves mixed into the Ayran. Ayran has become so popular in Turkey that it is often regarded as a separate market in contrast to the juice and soda industries, and is a challenge for "modern" soft-drink companies.
