| Hi Everyone, I run a new Zealand based search engine and during the last eighteen months since we started the search engine, we have found that people doing searches from inside NZ get results much slower than visitors from outside NZ which seems a little odd. The results show that for the same searched item, often within minutes or seconds of each other, people from New Zealand get the results upto thirty percent slower. We have looked at where the visit originated from, which gives us the ISP in use by the visitor and we have found that during 356,000 searches, people who use Xtra as an ISP are some of the slowest connections to the search engine. Sligshot are the quickest (Within NZ) and the searches are resolved within two seconds, Xtra show an average result time of seven seconds. Now when you take into account the fact that sometimes we have around sixty people searching at the same time, visitors from Xtra are using heaps more server time than other users because of the slow connection speeds, yet each are using broadband connections? Just how someone from Pakistan using a dialup modem connection to connect, can get the results of a search upto three times faster is beginning to worry us at the search engine. I would be interested to hear any comments folks have about connection speeds when using the web, I feel that New Zealand is being almost penalised by slow connection and bandwidth problems. Trying to get information from Telecom is like trying to play rugby with one leg and no hands. So I would appreciate any feedback anyone may have. Heaps of regards Dave A, | ||||

| Well, here we go. I'm on a 2gigabit connection with TelstraClear. I've tried searches on several different words. Common words and their times are listed first. Not-so common words are next. Love - 19 seconds Work - 32 seconds Travel - 1min 12 seconds Those results are shocking. James Bond - 1 min 10 seconds. Grapes - 42 seconds. Right - I'm not going to continue any further. As your site lags my computer. And at 4.2 ghz with 2 gig ram, that's hard to do. I'm using XP with Mozilla 1.5 browser. At 15:15 on a Saturday. Sites that are flash intensive load up faster. Here's a question - I could look at these details through my own hosting, but I won't. Because it's unethical. Where is your server based? | ||||
