Arrow Parents 'under-estimate' net risks

Parents still do not realise what their children do or see while they are on the net, a report suggests.

A fifth accessed the net in their bedrooms and 79% who had home access said they used the net with no supervision at all.
I don't agree with this at all (depending on the age of the kids). I think there shoudl be supervision, just becuase it is so easy to access stuff on the net.

Having a computer in a "public" area in your house would be better, this doesn't mean you need to be looking over their shoulder while they are using it.

But on the other side kids that are going to get into trouble generally find a way anyway.

Or invest in something like Net Nanny.

The safest way would be to block ALL websites and create a list of ones your kids are allowed to access.

I think they work on a filter/keyword system.

You enter the words that you want sites containg them to be blocked...

Reminds me of a quote: "Parents! Internet Explorer's 'Content Control' function - a bad way to stop your kids looking at porn!" "Kids! Internet Explorer's 'Content Control' function - an excellent way to piss off your parents."

(This is because it is really quite easy to remove the control if you aren't afraid to edit the registry...as I found out to my joy at my last job.)

Is what they're watching on TV any worse though?

Some of the stuff is pretty bad that is on the Internet but kids are just curious. As long as you have reasonably well adjusted kids you'll find they take a look at something taboo and then that's it. No big deal really.

It's when you find out they've logged into Imgonnakillmyparents.com a number of times that you should probably think about putting a nanny function on the PC!
