| 'The Maori Party wants all public servants to learn Maori and may require immigrants to swear an oath of allegiance to the Treaty of Waitangi, policy papers show. It wants to ensure Maori have a greater say in local and central government decision-making and to legislate to further protect Maori property rights.' http://tinyurl.com/97rx7. Who is going to pay for this nonsense? The Maori party don't seem overly organised really. | ||||

| This should be added to "The Lifestyle Choice" thread. It is getting to the point where we would have to ask permission for everything we want to do, i disagree that people should be made to learn Maori it is a load of crap, even the treaty of waitangi bit, CRAP, CRAP | ||||

| And before we know it, chinese will be demanding more rights in OUR country. ![]() Edit: And the drinking age shouldn't go back to 20. It should go to 70. ![]() | ||||

| This is Maori land, anyone coming here should learn the Maori language + culture. If youve got a problem with it, don't live here. Sad that people living here can be so disrespectful to the people of this land. | ||||

| I have to say that I find it sometimes annoying the way it is forced upon me. Is it not what so many Maori groups want, their own choice? Seem rather harsh to expect people to take a step backwards learning a language that is not in practical use. Not only that, but it also costs all that have to "step into line" to include Maori on all signage, paperwork etc. Man has evolved, nature has seen to it that english has spread, proving that without it you are left out of a large circle of communication. I hate to say, that I think a lot of Maori groups do not have the good of the people, but more the good of their own "mana" or that their pockets are well lined. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying Maori language should be forgotten, but lets get real, let people learn it if they wish. You could not seriously say that a visitor to NZ could not find their way around without speaking Maori? I also have to wonder how many 100% Maori folk there are in NZ? Why do they not stand as strongly behind their other mixed blood heritage? Should we hold responsible all the Maoris that have french blood, for nuclear tests? Good luck. Sometimes it is better to work toward a new future, not stick band-aids onto an already festered problem. Too much I hear "Honour the Treaty", let's get a new jingle. "Success is a journey, not a destination - Half the fun is getting there." - Gita Bellin | ||||

when the Maori came here, the 'people of the land' were the Moriori. how in the hell can you say that people living here are any more disrespectful than EATING THE PEOPLE WHO WERE HERE FIRST?? i can't believe the hipocracy of some people. | ||||

| As far as I'm aware there are NO full blooded maori alive in NZ anymore. Or if there are, there aren't many left. Imagine what NZ would be like had the English not turned up. Once the maori ate the moriori then perhaps they may have started on themselves after they pillaged the land of all it's natural goodness. They ate all the moa. Had the English waited a few years or so it's possible that when they turned up to NZ all they would have found was a bunch of bones. | ||||

| it is good to see they have there priorities right don't worry about drugs violence children getting abused ..... but as long as civil servants can speak maori every thing will be sweet. | ||||

| I can understand companys wanting there staff to learn Maori, but only if they are speaking or dealing with Maori most of the time. I am sick of being told what to do in this country. | ||||

| all nonsense what we should be teaching our children is how to speak and write and comprehend ENGLISH and if you want to learn another language no one is stopping you but dont make it compulsory for the rest of us. I am from Maori,Moriori,Irish descent..and I dont care who was here first...its about who is here now! | ||||
