I have to say that I find it sometimes annoying the way it is forced upon me.

Is it not what so many Maori groups want, their own choice?
Seem rather harsh to expect people to take a step backwards learning a language that is not in practical use.

Not only that, but it also costs all that have to "step into line" to include Maori on all signage, paperwork etc.
Man has evolved, nature has seen to it that english has spread, proving that without it you are left out of a large circle of communication.

I hate to say, that I think a lot of Maori groups do not have the good of the people, but more the good of their own "mana" or that their pockets are well lined.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying Maori language should be forgotten, but lets get real, let people learn it if they wish.
You could not seriously say that a visitor to NZ could not find their way around without speaking Maori?

I also have to wonder how many 100% Maori folk there are in NZ?
Why do they not stand as strongly behind their other mixed blood heritage?
Should we hold responsible all the Maoris that have french blood, for nuclear tests?

when the Maori came here, the 'people of the land' were the Moriori.

As far as I'm aware there are NO full blooded maori alive in NZ anymore. Or if there are, there aren't many left.

Imagine what NZ would be like had the English not turned up. Once the maori ate the moriori then perhaps they may have started on themselves after they pillaged the land of all it's natural goodness. They ate all the moa. Had the English waited a few years or so it's possible that when they turned up to NZ all they would have found was a bunch of bones.

Being born and bred in the centre of the universe {New Zealand} I think this is 'New Zealand' Land.

I can understand companys wanting there staff to learn Maori, but only if they are speaking or dealing with Maori most of the time. I am sick of being told what to do in this country.

2. this is NOT maori land... it is new zeaLAND we do not fly a red black and white flag. we have a red white and blue flag.

the nature loving maori whom treasured and worships the forest also hunted the moa to obilivion and in so doing killed of the worlds largest eagle.

they burnt down forests to get to moa's.. sounds like a spiritual people to me... NOT!

all nonsense what we should be teaching our children is how to speak and write and comprehend ENGLISH and if you want to learn another language no one is stopping you but dont make it compulsory for the rest of us.

Working for a company that looks after intelictually disabled adults, we were sent a Maori speaking program for them to do from head office. I had to laugh ... 95% of our clients have trouble reading - writing and communicating.
