I've been there once. It's very beautiful. Lovely beaches, surrounded by lots of bush and has heaps of national parks. Rather secluded but that's the beauty of the Hawkes Bay. Great vineyards.

Hawkes Bay is Awesome. Lots of Winerys, Good Weather, and if you like fishing, that is pretty good also.

Well, living here right now. There's nothing wrong with this part of the world, it's a little provincial, but the wine and fruit industries here provide an interesting lifestyle.

The food here in restaurants is fantastic, award-winning even. There's always something going on culturally, and the attitude here is pretty relxed. Great for families here. The education system might need a little boot up the arse, but there are some excellent schools here.

Smile Re: The life in Hawkes Bay

What is it, that we want to know about Hawkes Bay. Let me tell something about the way of live we are living here today. Now we are living in a small town in Norway. We(my wife, two boy’s and I) are from The Netherlands. Here in Norway people are not very open. They will say hello and be nice in your face(when your lucky)… But than it stops. The people are very at them self, if you know what I mean. It takes a lot of time to come in there world. Now after 2,5 years, we have a little bit more contact with the local people. I know, we have to do it our selfs, to make contact. But I think, it’s strange to find out that my neighbour is my colleague at work after 4 months. She knew that we where neighbours, but she didn’t say a thing. The kids are doing fine, they have there friends. But getting old here, no thank you…
So, how are the local people in Hawkes Bay. I know it’s a big area. So let’s take Hastings for example… I know for sure that I have still more questions. About schools, sports, nightlive, shopping etc etc etc… So if you want to tell me… Thanks for reading my little story..
Bye for now
Alexander

Wink Re: The life in Hawkes Bay

My only comment would be that I think Napier is nicer than Hastings. I wouldn't mind living in Napier, not so sure about Hastings. It really depends what area in these places. What makes you chose Hastings as have you considered other parts of New Zealand. Really to be honest, I guess it really doesn't matter what part of New Zealand one would like to live, they all have nice things about them and also not so nice things.

I have to agree that Napier is nicer than Hastings but the cost of rent is slightly cheaper in Hastings but that's about the only positive about Hastings really, Napier definately has really good areas to live and the beach and lots more to do but then it's only a ten minute drive from Hastings so that's not too bad.

apart from the sub- antarctic temps and the inter tribal cannibalism this is a relatively safe place to visit. Just avoid staring at anyone for more than 5 seconds at a time and remember that digital cameras are illegal in this military controlled region of NZ.
