This seems to me to be a worthwhile thing to do who ever and wherever you are.

The London Ambulance Service, particularly following the tragedy of Thusday as well as many other services nationwide, is trying to promote the "In Case Of Emergency (ICE)" Campaign. This was originally launched by East Anglian Ambulance Service with the support of Falklands war hero Simon Weston and in association with Vodafone's annual life savers award. The idea is that you store the word " I C E " in your mobile phone address book, and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency". In an emergency situation ambulance and hospital staff will then be able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact them. It's so simple that everyone can do it.

That's a brilliant idea. I wonder if it would catch on over here too. People have so many different numbers programmed into their mobile phones, it would be damn near impossible to figure out who the loved one to call would be. Of course I have names programmed in like "Mum" and "Dad" and "Brother" so at least they'd figure out who my family were!
