I know this is of no concern to the rest of you, but I finally got this flash demo working:

Ta-daa!
(Allow time for loading, movie is 120k with no preloader)

The rest is easy. Flash-based MMORPG, here we come!

I suppose you want some sort of prize.

How about a box-seat for the crucifixion?

Did you work out what was special about the shadows yet? I'll answer that one myself, since I just noticed what's also wrong with them (they're huge, way too big).

They grow very slowly - sun-setting styles. The nifty thing about the terrain technique used there is you can put all sorts of marks and shadows and stuff all over the terrain. I could draw them on when it's first loaded for a quick, permanent effect, or could have dynamic ones like the shadows. Time for some sunset-tinting I think.

This means blood-splatter, bodies, footprints, etc. I can probably whack up some water animations at some point too.

I am far too excited by this. Not healthy.

Objective of what? It's a flash demo. Read my journal, eventually I'll add network connectivity to it so players can wander around in the world together and complete tasks.

I went to bed thinking hard about some nifty environmental effects.

I'll set up a tint-circle whereby when you have your back to the sun, objects will be tinted with the sun colour. If you're facing the sun, objects will be tinted with the world-haze colour (normally purple/blue). In between objects can be untinted or tinted with the hue-falloff from the sun at the near edges (so objects are tinted yellow, orange, pink, unlit, blue and purple progressively as you rotate around them)

Then I thought, "I can tint the ground with the world-haze colour (since at sunset the ground gets dark first) and then fade object tints so they fade from the world-haze colour at the bottom to the sun tint colour at the top." Then I have the option of having the sun move slowly across the sky, altering the various environment colours and shadow lengths.

Shadows also need to fade into a circular shadow as they get shorter, and only use the object-specific shadow as they get longer.

Moh-ther-fucker. My connection was more or less eaten alive for the past few days, but seems to have come right again.

Anyway, in case it happens again it'll be available here from now on:

As you can see, things are taking shape! There seems to be ONE tree that never matches up to its shadow. I also used a Dirty Hack to get the player shadow to match the player as something wasn't working right.
