| NZ seems to have a theme that runs through all their sports teams, these are the NZ ones I could think of All Blacks - Rugby Kiwis - Rugby Leauge Black Caps - Cricket Tall Blacks - Basket Ball Silver Ferns - Netball Black Sox - Softball All whites? - Soccer (to be perfectly honest I can't think if that is what they are called or not) Black Sticks - Hockey Black Ferns? - Womens Rugby (is that what they are called??) The under 21's Rugby get called Baby Blacks sometimes. Is it just us that has this theme running through or do other countries do it too.. I know in rugby you get the Wallabies, and whatever their leauge team is called and the springboks and the SA's call their cricketers, Proteas. | ||||

| I've been searching through Google to try to find out what the men's hockey team is called but so far all I can find is that they're called the NZ Men's Hockey team. Weird, considering just about every other NZ sports team has a nickname of sorts. | ||||

| I was just looking on the NZ hockey federations site and they just call them NZ mens, but call the girls Black Sticks, so maybe they are nothing... weird, we should come up with a name for them! | ||||

| Going a bit to the side. There is a field game played in Germany. Back when I was in high school we rented time on a great private track. 2 cartons of cigs a week. Local german schools used the track and the field. They had a game played with a soccer ball. The field was two squares, each about 25 meters on a side. In the middle of each there was a circle about 5 meters radius. In the middle of the circle was a goal. Again, like netball, no backboard. The net was on a pole and the rim about 2.5 meters above ground. The ball was advanced by throwing and dribbling. A shot could be made from inside the circle with one bounce and then an immediate try at the basket. It was a long time ago. So the dimensions are probably way wrong. Very physical. | ||||

| sounds interesting, a game I wouldn't be keen on being Goalie in would be that lacross game.. I think thats the one, where they throw that hard little thing around with those nets on sticks... I saw some on SKY sport one day, man thats vicious. I used to be Goalie in hockey, and was grateful for all the padding etc... I hate being goalie in soccer, I play 5-aside in summer and you are meant to stand in this goal, with no padding or anything, and let these guys shoot the ball at you. Theres this one team they can be standing like 2 metres from you and still belt it. Ok so maybe I am just a wuss. | ||||

| No Penny, You got it right. And you are not a wuss! My dad used to say about Lacrosse, "First you get the biggest, baddest, fastest and most coordinated guys you can find. Rugby players will do. Then you give them a stick". In soccer, there is Free Kick. | ||||

| Hey Ed, what do they use in Lacrosse for a ball? is it a ball or a puck type thing? I could look on google but I'm being lazy... lol sorry! I've never seen lacrosse being played in NZ | ||||

| Being the captain was pretty tricky because two of my best friends also played on the team. One wanted to be goalie, but wasn't very good - and the other didn't want to be goalie, but was excellent in the goal. I did what was right for the team and pissed both my friends off. They got over it though ![]() |
