Default South Africa

This topic was inspired by kall's What comes to mind... thread

So...what comes to mind when you think of South Africa?

kall did you know that South Africa had one of the biggest Diamond and Gold Rushes during the 19th Century?

Kimberley has what we call 'Die Groot Gat' which loosely translated to 'The Big Hole' where a shitload of diamonds were mind from. It's kind of a national landmark these days.

Also, Johannesburg was home to our very own Gold Rush. The area where I live in is called Germiston and it's biggest mine was called Simmer & Jack which produced the most gold in the whole Johannesburg area.

Just some interesting facts for you

Yarpies - not sure of the spelling. But that's what we call South Africans over here.

I think that's a 'transformed' word derived from Japies as in Stadsjapies. That's slang for 'Cityslicker'

The Washing of the Spears: A History of the Rise of the Zulu Nation Under Shaka and Its Fall in the Zulu War of 1879 by Donald R. Morris, Mangosuthu Chief Buthelezi What a book. What a time. What people. Dutch, English, Zulu. Treks. The movie Zulu was from one chapter of the book. Like all movies about battles and wars and people, it matters which side tells the tale.

11 Harrowhouse and Stone 588 from Gerald A. Browne

I do not think of trees. I think of scrub grass. Sand and red mud when it rains.

I do not know why I do not think green. I worked in Lagos, Nigeria for a bit and then in Saudi. I think more of the saudi landscape than the Nigerian green. (Nigerian thought: Wonderful country wonderful people, horrid government)

I think of Cape Town!

By any standard Cape Town is one of the most beautiful and compelling places to visit on the planet. You'll encounter mountain, wilderness, rugged coastlines, sandy beaches, lush gardens, beautiful wine estates, and some of the warmest, most welcoming people you'll ever meet.
