| The question itself is very broad. In general, I suppose I would answer No... But, the definition of prejudice has to be set. If it means " An attitude or opinion about a person or group based upon that person or group's race, color, religion, national origin, ethnicity, accent, gender, disability, or other external characteristic. Prejudice is making your mind up about what someone is like before you get to know that person." then the answer would become blurred. If, for example, I run a restaurant, and am interviewing applicants for the positon of Muffin Cooker, and my office door opens and a young man in a wheelchair rolls in, controlling it with his chin...what is my assumption going to be? Probably 'Umm...dude, I don't think you would be as able to do the job as that guy over there who has the full use of his faculties'...and that would be true. So, is that prejudice? In saying that, I did work with a young man who had cerebral palsy, he was our Muffin Cook. In general, he was a good worker, but there were several instances where my work in the Office was interrupted by having to run out and shut off the smoke alarms that he had set off by torching a batch. | ||||

Anyway, we have the alarm going off on a regular basis becuase the guys in the transformer workshop decide to have a BBQ and set the fire alarm off... they are *slowly* learning, 1) to do it with the door open, and 2) if they set the fire alarm off everyone joins them for a BBQ. (that didn't have much to do with disabilities, but was good to show anyone can do those things)

| No. But sometimes it is very hard to ignore - people with disabilities will always have a harder time... but it really is up to the person to overcome these disabilities... if the person can do this then he/she wouldn't really have to worry of prejudice or biases. | ||||

| You know I find it kind of odd how 100% of this community so far say they aren't prejudice, yet the posts speak otherwise. I realise that there were some factors involved with their posts but being downright rude about it is not ok with me. This is all I'm going to post about this. From now on just continue posting what you want about each other, but know that the moment you break any of the NZB rules I will be on to you like a sack of patatoes. Have a nice day ![]() NF | ||||

| thanks guys you really make me feel accepted in this community. the reason why i made this poll was to find out if i told you my disabilities if you would be mean. here are my disabilities: deaf in right ear, hard of hearing in left ear, ld, mfas, panic attacks, hormonial imbalance, migraines, i don't act my age, and an anger problem. | ||||

NF Your attitude is true of many people. When I went to school, there was one coloured lad in my class. Him and I didnt get on, for various reasons. People labelled me a racist for not liking him. The truth of the matter was that the reasons I didnt like him had nothing to do with the colour of his skin. It was due to the fact he was a wanker. If there are 'white' people I dont like thats fine, if there are black people I dont like I am a racist. Explain this to me. You presume that I dont like Jeni because she is disabled. Wrong. I dont like Jeni because she annoys me. There is no relationship between the two. If she wasnt disabled she'd still annoy me. As I have said elsewhere, my boss is in a wheel chair, and he would be the first person to slap me down if I treated him any differently because of the fact he was in a chair. You have jumped to conclusions about users prejudice. You are allowed your opinion. Personally I dont think you have actually closely read what is being said, in fact if any prejudice is being showns its by people like Sparkle and Penny. Do they give points and karma to every new member to NZB? Or has their kindness be due to the fact that Jeni plays her diability for everything it is worth? Oh and dont threaten me with the slap down again. Freedom of speech is all that makes one site different from another. I'll happily leave if it turns out that the people Kall has put faith in to be staff at this site turn out to betray that truth and turn out to be assholes with ego issues. *bends over so NF can kiss his ass* ![]()

| AFAIK, I haven't written any rules that apply to who exactly people are allowed to be mean to, except for 'Be nice to newbies' at the top of the list, and an effective 'Do unto others' clause. If you piss someone off, they have a right to retaliate. I'm not going to take that away. Regarding the current 'issue': again, AFAIK, there have been NO attacks on Jeni that are directly related to the fact she has disabilities. (If I am wrong, please quote them here and I will correct myself.) Ontopic: Jeni, what difference does it make what your disabilities are? Why tell us if you want us to remain unprejudiced? Why not be like evrybody else, a faceless (if you choose) name on a messageboard? By constantly pointing them out, it seems to me that for whatever reason, you are choosing to wear the disabilities as either a suit of armour, protecting you from everything, or a Golden Ticket, something that allows you to do whatever you like, because you are disabled. I am going to re-open this poll, because it isn't really fair to have it showing 100% yes and allowing nobody else to vote, whilst the discussion continues. *edit* Err...making a Poll with *this* topic a Public one (so anyone can see who voted for what) is likely to make people vote Yes regardless of their actual opinion, so as to not be seen to be 'a Cripple Basher'...don't ya think? | ||||

One thing I learnt with my cousins is that you can actually do more harm than good when you are trying to "over compensate" for someone with a disability. Sandy use to be able to get around on crutches. Yes it was hard work for him but it gave him a resonable freedom to get around and it gave him a sense of achievement. Out of kindness a lot of the family would "make things easier" for him by pushing him around in a wheelchair. This became the norm and over time Sandy lost the ability to use the crutches because his muscle strength was dimisihed... Our kindness had infact not done him any favours. So no I am not prejudiced! I make allowances for difficulties a person may have, be they Physical ,educational, emotional or mental but i do NOT accept it when people use their disabilities as an excuse. My girlfriend with MS finds it hard to even get out of bed somedays, she often loses the use the right hand side of her body and is constantly having to battle with her illness... In amoungst all of this SHE has set up a business and isnt "riding" on anybodies wave. she is truely inspirational and shows us that anyone can achieve anything they wish to. To suggest that my annoyance is "cripple Bashing" irks me!

What can I say? I guess I'm just a nice person I guess. Nothing wrong with that is there? And if they piss me off, then I smack them down as well. Jeni, you seem to want people to treat you as a normal person, however you are constantly throwing your disabilities in our faces when we do try to treat you like a normal person ... I can understand why some people are getting frustrated.

Yes Sparkle... you and Panny are both very sweet and I have witnessed you giving points and Karma to others... Myself included. ( I gave away a load of points some months ago and didnt even tell the recipients..) It is that spirit which makes these boards a nice place to be. Alas i fear your kindness has been taken advantage of and pushed to the point of "EXPECTATION" The gift is in the giving when it is not expected... once it becomes expected or demanded then the joy of the kindness is diminished. **SUPER BIG HUG** To Sparklechick for her generous Nature ( This is in no way to be seen as an attempt to kissup :P)

| i just wanted people to know who i am in all reality. i am not using it as a ticket to get free stuff or to get my way at all. i want to let you know because i feel better about myself because i can talk about my disabilities freely. it is hard for some to talk about their disabilities. i use to not be able to talk about my disabilities openly like i do now. i have learned how to deal with my disabilities and how to talk about them over the years. so if you have any questions on how i deal with a certain disability just ask me because i will gladly tell you. | ||||
