Default Name this spider.

I wonder if anyone can recognise this spider?

It was spinning a big web (3 feet diameter) on my deck.

It is/was 50mm across from toe to toe (i presume they have toes)

Sorry for the fuzzy shots.

Graham!

Oh god, I was so worried. I think he must have stowed away in my tobacco pouch and escaped when we were eating Tiramasu.

But seriously. Was the abdomen shiny or matt? And what colour was it overall? Red? The flash has washed it a bit.

You will be pleased to know I did not squash him.
Keeps the flies and mossies down, suits me.

His body was a fawn colour like the first photo.
The red flashes were on his upper thighs ??

Had I switched to macro mode the flash would not have been so intense, shame on me.

So have you seen such a beast, I kind of wish I had captured him, but I am sure he'll turn out to be a common one.

I checked at the MAF site, no list there showed one like this.

Am in total agreement there. Funnily enough though sometimes the most ugliest spiders are the most fascinating to look at. Used to see a heap of different kinds in Aussie, some had amazing colours to them.

Spiders don't generally tend to live long in my presence. I'm not a big fan .... I'll put up with daddy-long-legs as long as they're not to close to me but anything crawling around in my vicinity turns into squashiness within seconds. Otherwise I find myself looking over my shoulder constantly waiting for the little blighter to land on me.

I learnt not to do that when living in Australia as you never knew which ones were poisonous and which ones weren't.

The ones I hated the most were the Huntsman, they were blimmen ugly things, not poisonous at all but would leap at you if you tried to squash it so that's when the ever faithful vacuum cleaner would come out.

Excuse me but..there, in New Zealand, it seems that you are very familiar with the spiders...isn't it? And big spiders!
