This is what I was told by a Telecom rep when I phoned to complain that a beeping thing was calling me every 5 minutes.

They advised that it was probably a modem phoning our number, thinking it was a server.

I advised that it was annoying.

They advised that it had to go on for 24 hours before they could do anything.

I calmly enquired: 'Every 5 minutes for 24 hours?!'

They advised that yes, this was indeed the case.

The technology is surely available to block calls from certain numbers, but I guess Telecom is worried about users abusing the facility . . .

"No sir, your mother-in-law has a perfect right to call at any time of the day or night and tell you you're not good enough for her daughter."

Maybe someone can hack the caller ID hardware and arrange their own blocks

I note that you promote Ditching to a proper noun. I second this higher ranking of shafting telecom, who I have demoted to being a regular noun in accordance with our new fluid naming scheme.

Any decent telephone or answering machine should be able to do it.
