Astronauts on board the Internation Space Station photographed Hurricane Fabian silhouetted against the limb of the Earth on 4th September, 2003. Fabian produced wind speeds of almost 200 kph as it churned towards Bermuda. The photo is archieved by the Earth Sciences and Image Analysis Lab at Johnson Space Centre. The lab aims to increase our understanding of such extreme events. It recently flew several aircraft missions into the centre of the hurricanes such as Fabian in order to measure the characteristics of the atmoshere inside, which cannot be observed directly even from overhead
