Unless you do a lot of hard drive searches (I mean a lot.) then this feature really is just a huge resource hog.

1. Browse to your hard drive either through Windows Explorer or through my computer
2. Right click your hard drive icon and select properties.
3. At the bottom of this window you'll see "Allow indexing service to index this disk for faster searches," turn this feature off for all of your drives by unchecking the box and clicking ok..
4. After that a window will appear and you'll want to choose apply to all folders and subfolders if you want the full benefit.

I found that hard drive indexing actually slowed down my searching. It only actually kicked in once because it was indexing the files all the other times. So I turned it off!

Is there a size where this will apply?

Will it affect defrag?

Thanks

It shouldn't effect defragging, and the size at which it causes slowdowns is probably 10G or something.

I have 2x80G and one 150G drive, and it definitely effected those.

All it is useful for is making searches faster by 'indexing (marking)' every file to know where it is later, faster.
