Default Digital cameras - which one is best on a budget of about $500 ?

I am looking at buying a reasonable camera to last me a couple of years but I don't have money to burn.

I was thinking something that was;
- at least 3 mega pixel,
- preferably with a optical zoom,
- a digital zoom,
- the ability to take a series of photos (burst?) so that an action shot of a racing car isn't missed,
- movie capable
- & memory expansions are not cripplingly expensive.

Any suggestions on brands and models?

I was meaning a new camera.

At this stage I am leaning towards the Sony Cybershot but I am still working through which model is best for my needs.

I know someone with a DSC-P71...it's a Cybershot, but he'd be a bit of a greedy prick to want $500 for it.

I'd say the equivalent now would be around $500 tho, brand new. It would be flasher too.

I like the Sony Cybershot range. I find them simple to use and I use a Sony DSC-F717. The Sony DSC-W1 looks like a good camera, its 5.1 mega pixels and has a good size LCD screen.
Here is a good Independent wep site: http://www.dpreview.com/ of most of the main cameras.

UPDATE

I am now the proud owner of a Sony DSC-P100 Cybershot 5.1 Megapixel camera with a Carl Zeiss lens and a 32MB memory stick. www.dpreview.com review

After a lot of hunting around Auckland I found prices for this model ranging from the Recommended Retail Price of $799, one shop for $699 but with a free 128MB memory stick through to one at Parallel Imported for $499.

I would have preferred to support the NZ distributor network, but can someone explain to me what I am getting for that extra $300 (60%) markup when compared to something parallel imported?

Sure, the one I got came with a British 'fused plug' on the battery charger but the shop included a NZ lead in the deal for free so it wasn't a problem.

All I have to do now is get a 128MB memory stick and learn how to use things like the 'burst' mode before the motor racing on the 15th.
Oh, and I can recommend the manual for midnight reading for insomniacs as it nearly put me to sleep after about 50 pages (of the 150) in the middle of the afternoon.

I have a 1 geg memory stick now that took me a while to get as they are still expensive. Its a memory stick pro and will only work in cameras that are memory stick pro compatible. Most new cameras are now.
