| I have a question for all you knowledgeable people. Can your boss tell you when you have to take leave? I knwo if you don't use it up they can, but I am not in that situation, I wanted to take time off over christmas and then go back to work for the 5th Jan and then take a week off when my dad comes over from the 17th Jan to the 21st. When I gave my boss my leave forms he asked me what I was doing for the weeks inbetween and I told him I was working. He then said to me "He wanted to have all the team off for that week" a discussion was had, then he was still fairly set on this, everybody have that time off, and then he said he would think about it that day, and that was 1 month ago and he never got back to me. I am assuming that because he didn't get back to me, the leave as it is is fine, and so I will do that, unless he says something else, but My Mum keeps going on about how he can't do that anyway, and I just wanted to know if they can or not, as I don't know. | ||||

| My flatmate pays close attention to the employment regulations. The answer is a big affirmative - your employer can decide when your leave should be taken. | ||||

| Keep yourself appropriately covered up and he might warm to the idea. | ||||

| As per ers.govt.nz: Our employer is advising that we will have to take two weeks annual leave because there's not much work on and she wants to have the offices renovated. Can she do this? Yes. Your employer is in fact entitled to do this under the provisions of the Holidays Act 1981 if: 1. you have been employed for at least a continuous 12 month period and therefore currently have an entitlement to all or part of your 3 week physical annual leave entitlement, and 2. your employer gives you at least 7 days notice under section 19 of the Act. So, it looks like your employer doesn't have to agree to when you want to take leave. It also has to do with keeping things balanced for the business and stuff. | ||||
| ||||
| Yeah I reckon it should only be if there is a good business reason.... I wonder if he can make me take it if wouldn't be out of my current annual leave, and he has already approved the other annual leave.... hehe.... | ||||

| I'm really glad that I work for a company that stays open over Christmas. When I worked for another company we had to take 10 days leave over Christmas/New Year. That left me with 5 days leave to use during the rest of the year which is a real arse if you want to go on holiday other than at Christmas. So now I usually take a few days at Christmas and save the rest up for when I want a break in the middle of the year (which is when I usually need time off). | ||||

| My employer does this too Regular employees have their holiday time measured from the end of the month in which their birthday lies. Why? I have no idea. Standard practice it to measure all holiday time from the start of the financial year but not my employer, oh no. It gets more confusing. As I am on a series on 1 year contracts I am not considered to be part of this system and my holiday time is measured from the end of the month in which my contract started. With me so far? Good! It so happened that I has 12.5 days of holiday untaken (is that even a word) and they had to be used by the end on November of I'd lose them. So, my boss has put be on a pattern of every other week with Fridays off until the end of the month. That coupled with day release on the Wednesdays of the two weeks I am working means that I will be in work for a total of 7.5 days this month. Anyway. That given me some time to be here. Yay! | ||||

| Well this afternoon I had to brach the wholeleave thing with him again, I was ignoring it. I decided after my conversation he was even more mental than I already thought... the conversation went a bit like.. Penny: "Mr Boss ( I used his name) could I also have the 24th off work as I need to get up to Whangarei by 7pm" *boss stares at leave form that has been placed in front screws up nose* Boss: "I thought you already were having the 23rd and 24th off as we discussed and you went all sad faced on me" Penny: "No that wasn't what was discussed at all, you indicated you wanted me to take off all the way from after chrsitmas to atleast the 17th and I wanted to take from the 17th then you said you would think about it for that day and as you didn't get back to me I assumed that you were happy with the leave you approved at the time" *boss stares at paper again* Boss: "well what are you planning to do on the 23rd then?" Penny: "Well work..." Boss: "Anything Specfic?" Penny: "Well i haven't planned past the next hour, so I don't know what I will be doing on Thursday, but theres always something to do" *boss sighs and signs my leave form* *Penny walks away smirking* | ||||

| I decided to take the 24th off to ... my conversation: Me: Hey Boss I'm gonna take Friday off this week so I can get up north early Boss: Good idea Me: Right then okay | ||||

| Thats how it should be I reckon Sparkly Gal.... I think hes just annoyed that he had this wonderful idea that the whole team could be off when he is and if he told people they would do it. Only one person is co-operating in the team, and that is only because it suits her. He even tried to get one of the operators to take leave a tthe time, and he turned around and said "So you want me to take annual leave, but still effectively be on standby, and therefore can't do anything that is more that 15 mins from work, get off" haha. | ||||
| ||||
| If you dont like the times he says you have to take your leave, then you always have the option of taking permanant leave ![]() | ||||

| I find the week between Christmas and New Year is perfect for getting all those things done that need to get done but always end up being interrupted by "users" and their constant nagging emails demanding stupid little things that aren't their concern or our responsibility, hi Kall ![]() | ||||
