| That's right. Because of the hail the other day, the price of strawberries has gone from (average) $2.50 a punnet to $5.00 a punnet. Evidently soft fruit don't enjoy being pummeled with frozen raindrops. | ||||
| ||||
| That's the excuse anyway. Even if they were already picked and loaded onto the backs of rather large and hail-proof lorries I can't see the distributors and retailers missing the chance to make a quick profit. Odds are that the growers will not see any of the extra money you paid and they will probably even take a loss if there was any actual strawberry pummeling in the fields. | ||||

| They always double the price round Chrsitmas anyway, its sad sad sad, I love strawberries. | ||||
| ||||
| it's the same with the cherries too. I'm not a huge fan of cherries but I do like to have at least a couple of fresh cherries over the Christmas period. LURVE strawbellies though ... this darned weather! I blame it on all the Britz who have moved to NZ lately ... they've brought their stinking weather with them! | ||||
| ||||
| What you have to understand about Brittish weather is that it is not purely stinking. It's "changable" i.e. it's liable to change at a moment's notice. You can forget forcasts. The bloody thing does what it wants, when it wants. | ||||
| ||||
| Auckland weather is exactly the same at the moment Darkling. Totally changeable ... every 5 minutes or so. | ||||

| I went and got all my veges for xmas day at 7am this morning. Didnt get cherries but I did pay $4 for blueberries and the container is so small I could tip all the blueberries in my hand and eat in one mouthfull. lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, peppers, plums, strawberries, fresh peas, sprouts, 2x kiwifruit, 2x apples, new potatoes, and a peice of watermelon. $62 bloody dollars. Oh and raspberries were $4 a punnet and they were almost juice. | ||||

| Blueberries!!! Sparkle: Dessert? Pancakes? Blueberries? Syrup? | ||||
| ||||
| We'll check them out when we go shopping tonight Kall ... could visit that Vege shop on Dominion Rd before we hit Foodtown to see if they've got them cheaper. | ||||
| ||||
| At this popular place where strawberries are really good, someone was saying at work, they are rashsioning people. 2 punnets each, and theres like a queue and everything. | ||||

Yumm I was going to be using mine in a apple and blueberry crumble but I think I might use the frozen ones for the crumble. | ||||

| There's an apple tree in my garden. There used to be a plum tree also until it got rather singed by too close a bonfire and never bore fruit again. All around the back of the hill behind my house there grow wild blackberry bushes and even better ones just 15-20 minute walk along the canal bank. Come summer there's no short supply of free fruit for pies, tarts, crumbles, etc. | ||||
