Air
NZ is often a more expensive option. If you can get to Australia Freedom Air or Pacific Blue (part of Virgin Blue) will sell you one way tickets. Virgin Blue flies Singapore to Sydney. Then fly Sydney Christchurch or Sydney to Auckland.
My advice is for scenery hit the South Island in February-March.
