Ill wind for Kiwis
==================
We have had the New Zealand prime minister in here this afternoon, and what a delightful person Helen Clark is. We were talking New Zealand lamb after her claim that in terms of food miles NZ lamb produces fewer emissions than British agricultural practices - shunting animals all over the country - does to produce local lamb. It is an unfortunate fact that New Zealand farmers have so many sheep and goats that their collective "wind-passing" combines to produce 49% of the country's entire emissions in methane gas. Obviously one cannot really discuss farts with a prime minister, and I tried not to. But she fully understood what we were talking about, and she says New Zealand scientists are trying to convert the energy expended in wind passing to the production of still more food.
