Turangi and Taupo are a bit further from Tauranga, however Mt Maunganui is very close to Tauranga and has a fabulous beach.

The first time I went to Taupo I was 12 and they had the most disgusting toilets I've ever come across (except when I went to Thailand). I'm glad to say when I went to Taupo a couple of years ago their toilets had improved immensely and I enjoyed my stay. Great nightlife too.
