I guess it would depend on what you're wanting to do here. Auckland is the biggest city so probably has more opportunity for work (depending on what you do).
I'm not sure if you'd call it expensive ... that depends on where you live. Take a look through some of the other threads here and you'll see some of the advice we've given to other members wanting to visit
