Default re: Another prison for TURANGI

There is a demand for prison accommodation throughout NZ and perhaps it easier for the Corrections Department to get a new prison passed under the Resource Management Act when there is already an existing facility. I can't see it being built in any of the major cities because of the NIMBY attitude of many of the residents (some rightly so) and the land values.

Personally I would like to see a prison built somewhere like Waiuru for third time offenders, somewhere that is harsh and makes them think twice about going back. In this prison extra heating would be a privilege that is earned and SKY TV would be unheard of. The day would consist of almost military style routines and discipline and would be an early breakfast followed by schooling until noon as IMHO many prisoners have no option but a life of crime as they have fallen through the gaping holes in our education system. After lunch the inmates would have some menial tasks to do like breaking rocks to remind them that they are not at Club Med, then dinner and free time before lights out at 10pm.
Currently inmates seem to have too many luxuries like SKY TV etc that many law abiding citizens cant even afford. FFS, prison is supposed to be a punishment and not a holiday camp.
