I wonder if it could be some sort of coping mechanism to continue as if nothing has happened.
If so,I would hate to be around these people when they are in the 'safety' of their own homes and their minds are able to relax enough for the true horror of the situation they survived to be processed.
Stress can do funny / weird things to the mind and the mind's way of dealing with it is to bury it until the immediate danger has passed and deal with it later.

Either way, I also thought it was strange to see the photo in the newspaper of the tourists in deck chairs will all the destruction in the background.
